Learning
At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that development of skills in literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and for everyday life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals.
What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
At our school, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE) classes, depending on what’s available. These classes are delivered by approved providers.
When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE or SEE are given supervised, alternative meaningful activities.
You’re welcome to change your choice at any time. Just let us know in writing or use the online form (if available at our school).
For more information, visit the department’s website or contact us.
At Cronulla South Public School, our Special Religious Education (SRE) classes are held for 30 minutes on Tuesdays. Special Religious Education classes K-6 are: Catholic and Combined Protestant.
On enrolment parents/carers are given the SRE participation letter to complete and return.
After the initial enrolment, notification of changes to a child’s enrolment in SRE should be given to the school in writing or via the online form.
The following SRE classes are offered at Cronulla South Public School:
Catholic SRE is provided by the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney.
For more information about Catholic SRE, including the authorised curriculum scope and sequence, please visit the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney website – sydneycatholic.org
Combined Protestant SRE is provided by St Andrew's, Cronulla as part of the combination of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, the Baptist Union of NSW, the Churches of Christ NSW and ACT, the Fellowship of Congregational Churches and the Australian Christian Churches. The Combined Protestant SRE use the Anglican curriculum.

During the time that SRE/SEE classes are being held, students not attending will be located in a separate space and will participate in meaningful activities which could include reading.
At our school, we give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.
We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.

Our learning approach
Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.
Our learning approach includes:
- real-world learning: hands-on tasks, group work and exploring new ideas
- technology: to help students learn and build digital skills
- flexible teaching: the right support for each student, with a focus on wellbeing
- community connections: through excursions and local programs.
Helping students progress
We support every student’s academic progress by:
- checking their progress and giving clear and timely feedback
- setting learning goals with each student
- giving extra help with personalised plans and support from specialist staff
- reporting on each student’s learning progress so parents and carers know how their child is doing
- providing targeted literacy and numeracy support in small groups
- making wellbeing part of everyday learning
- working with families to support learning at home and school
- helping students through transitions, like starting school or moving to a new stage of learning.

CSPS Bring your own device (BYOD)
Cronulla South Public School has as an option a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program across Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 classes. Our vision is to encourage creative and innovative learning opportunities for students using BYOD as a tool to facilitate and maximise learning.
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) refers to students bringing a personal technology device to school to use for educational purposes under the direction of a teacher. For BYOD, ‘device’ refers to a privately owned wireless laptop. This will also ease transitions into high school, where students must bring laptops. Please Note: Cronulla South Public School has decided that mobile phones/smartphones/smartwatches that allow communication with others throughout the day and tablets will not be accepted, as stated in the NSW Department of Education's Digital Devices and Online Services for Students.
Students can connect compatible devices to a filtered DoE internet service, providing students with safe and secure internet access.
There are many reasons to go BYOD at Cronulla South Public School. These include:
- Increased access to online resources.
- Increased access to develop the skills to use technology efficiently and effectively.
- More personalised and differentiated learning is available, eg. Using Google Classroom as a platform and various apps to produce quality work, adjusted to individual learners’ needs.
- Allows students more control of their learning.
- Develops student organisation skills and a sense of responsibility.
- Creates future-focused learning environments that can increase student engagement.
- Eases transition to high school where students must use laptops more frequently.
Equity is integral to the BYOD initiative at Cronulla South Public School. This is an opt-in program for students who can bring in a device. Bringing a device for BYOD is not compulsory, and devices will be available at school for students who cannot provide their own. However, students will not be allowed to take the school devices home; this is where the advantage of having your device comes in. BYOD also provides a level of responsibility to students and allows them to look after a device and manage things like charging. The school will be providing help to parents on how to ensure that devices are kept safe.
